Chimney Caps

At the top of your chimney is your chimney cap. When it comes time to buy chimney caps, it may seem to be a daunting process. However, sorting through chimney caps is easy with the right information.

Start by figuring out the shape of your chimney cap. Look at the flue, and you will see that it is either round, square, or rectangular. Multi-flue chimney caps are always rectangular.

Next, you will want to figure out the type of chimney cap you will need. For flues that stick up above the chimney crown and are square or small rectangles a single flue chimney cap will work. You can also choose custom chimney caps that cover your entire chimney. If your flue sticks up less than an inch, you will need a top mount cap. Multi-flue chimneys usually work best with a top mount chimney cap that covers the entire flue.

Next, you will need to figure out the size of your chimney cap. A contractor will need to go up on the roof and measure it for this step. Make sure to measure carefully, since many places will not allow you to return the cap if it does not fit. Then you can choose your cap.

Copper chimney caps arrive shiny and new looking, but age quickly to a green patina. A black chimney cap is made from galvanized steel that has been coated with a black powder-coated paint. A stainless steel chimney cap is also made from galvanized steel, but retains the shiny metal look. Chimney rain caps are designed to protect your chimney’s flue from rain and animal invasion. Concrete chimney cap replacement should be done by a professional. For a more decorative style, you can look for vintage chimney caps that are reminiscent of a previous era.

If you choose, you can install your chimney cap yourself. Always wear appropriate protective gear when working. A single flue chimney cap just slips into the flue and has to be screwed down. An inside mount chimney cap for a round tile flue needs to be pushed in and sealed. The same goes for an inside mount chimney cap on a metal flue, except that it does not need to be sealed. Top mount chimney caps can be installed with adhesive or Tapcon masonry anchors. Make sure you read all directions carefully before getting started to ensure that the chimney cap is the proper one for your chimney, and that it is installed properly for your own safety.
