Firebacks

There’s nothing more romantic or more comforting than a warm fire burning on the hearth. Unfortunately, however, the heat that warms our hearts and homes has a tendency to damage the brickwork inside our fireplace, and deteriorate the wooden studs in the wall behind it. As a result, firebacks have for centuries been sought after, not only for their beauty and elegance, but also to protect rear masonry and radiate heat back into the room.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, firebacks were par for the course. Both functional and highly decorative, no home was complete without one. On occasion, in place of these antique firebacks, stove plates were modified and used as efficient firebacks. In modern times, the use of a fireback isn’t as common as it was, but it is definitely a worthwhile addition to your hearth. And no matter what your style, it’s easy to find either a modern design or a quality replica of a cast iron antique fireback that suits you.

Fitting a fire back into your fireplace isn’t as difficult as it may seem. Most fireplace firebacks simply stand in the back of the fireplace at an angle, relying on their heft to keep them in place. Antique firebacks and stove plates used as firebacks were sometimes embedded into the masonry, and today this is an option for the ambitious do-it-yourself enthusiast. Some modern firebacks even attach to the rear wall with screws. As for size, most fire backs are between 20 to 32 inches in height and width, so it shouldn’t be difficult to fit a fire back into your fireplace.

Genuine antique firebacks that are in good condition are by far the most coveted. However, they’re a rare find. As mentioned above, though, if it’s an antique you want, there are plenty of manufacturers who specialize in fine replicas. Prices vary from store to store, but a good replica may cost anywhere from $150 to $1000. Another option is a ceramic fire back. Ceramic firebacks tend to work well with gas fires, and are usually rather inexpensive. They range in price from $60 to $200.

These are just a few of the fire back grounds that are available on the market. While some models may seem a bit costly, they are certainly worth the price to protect your home. And with a little diligence, you’ll soon find a good fireback on sale.
