Wood Stove Installation

So you have picked out the wood stove of your dreams, and figured out the perfect place for it in your home. The next major step is the installation of your wood stove. Here are some pointers to help you with installing a wood burning stove.

Your wood stove installation starts with a chimney. Every woodstove has to have one. You cannot simply install your wood burning stove to vent out the window or the roof. Only install a UL approved wood stove chimney. For the installation of your wood stove metal chimney, taller is better, and the fewer the bends the better the draft. When installing a wood stove pipe, your chimney should extend two feet above everything within a ten foot radius, and have a cap on top to prevent birds and debris from entering. If you are installing a wood stove to a masonry chimney, the flu liner should be the same size as the stovepipe and located inside the building when possible.

Your wood stove pipe installation is the next major step. The stove pipe attaches your stove to the chimney. In most cases, you will need to install your wood stove in a fashion that gives your stove pipe an 18 inch clearance from any flammable materials, walls or ceilings.

The last thing to consider with your wood burning stove installation is the floor and walls. Non-combustible flooring should extend under the entire stove, and should continue at least a foot past the sides and 18 inches in front of any doors used for loading. Your wall clearance can be reduced by using a rear heat shield or other wall protection, otherwise, use the manufacturer’s recommendations.

If trying to figure out how to install a wood stove is too much for you, keep in mind that many vendors of wood stoves will do the installation for you for a fee. Also, most stove manufacturers will include installation specs to assist you. For instance, if you are trying to do a Fisher wood stove installation, read over your Fisher wood stove installation specs before beginning.

Failure to install your wood burning stove properly can lead to inefficient use and/or safety concerns such as a fire. Double check all parts of your wood stove before burning to make sure that it is properly installed, and check parts frequently for wear and tear.

The installation of an outdoor wood stove requires different parameters, so you should research this thoroughly before beginning.
